KOCHI: The business community in the city has high hopes from the Corporation budget 2012-13. From a road repairing unit to multi-level parking facilities, the business community has suggested innovative ways to combat the city’s core problems.“The city lacks a consumer-friendly infrastructure. We have raised this issue with the Corporation and expect the budget to have the solutions for the same,” said K N Marzook, chairman, Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI)."KCCI has proposed to construct an open air auditorium for the Corporation on the condition of availability of land in the vicinity of the Goshree Bridge near the extended Marine Drive. It has also proposed to build a permanent exhibition centre in the city. If entrusted, KCCI shall also undertake the maintenance of the Town Hall as well as the Subash Chandra Bose Park. All these will ensure that the leisure component of Kochi goes up,” added Marzook.Good roads and parking facilities also figure in the priority list of the community.“The main reason behind the pathetic condition of the city’s roads is that the potholes are neglected and allowed to grow. A road repairing unit, like the ones that exist abroad, solves the problem by patching the small potholes as soon as they appear. This will not only help in reducing the maintenance cost of our roads but will also boost our infrastructure. Another aspect that needs immediate attention is the lack of parking facility in the city. Multi-level parking facilities, wherever space permits, will solve this issue,” said Venkatesh Pai, president, Kerala Merchants’ Union (KMU).“The most common reason given by the Corporation for the non-implementation of developmental projects is the dearth of funds. This issue can be sorted out if the Corporation collects its tax arrears on a war-footing,” he added.
