KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation will soon seek the intervention of the state government to solve the ongoing tussle between the civic body and the district panchayat over the setting up of a new solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram.
Kochi Mayor Tony Chammany told Express that the setting up of a new plant was important for the city to solve the issues related to solid waste management of not only the city but also neighbouring municipalities and panchayats."We hope that the state government will soon initiate steps to convince the representatives of the local bodies. As the existing plant at Brahmapuram is defunct, the civic body will have to look for options to effectively manage the disposal of waste. The renovation of the existing plant is not practical and the only solution available to the Corporation is to set up a new plant," the Mayor said.

Earlier, district panchayat president Eldose Kunnappally and K P Dhanapalan MP had reiterated that they would oppose any move to set up a new plant at Brahmapuram. Denying reports that the factionalism in the Congress had played a major role in the resistance from the district panchayat president, the Mayor said that it had nothing to do with the issue. "We will try to convince them and if any issue is there, we will try to resolve those issues," the Mayor added.
