Crime Has Always Been a Part of the Society, Says New DGP of UP
After taking the charge, Om Prakash Singh on Tuesday said that it is an honour for him to serve as the DGP of Uttar Pradesh.

Lucknow: Om Prakash Singh was officially sworn in as the Director General of Uttar Pradesh Police on Tuesday, nearly 20 days after the post fell vacant.

After taking the charge, Singh said that it is an honour for him to serve as the DGP of UP.

"Crime has always been a part of our society. There are lot of challenges in front of us right now; luckily we have got some able officers to fulfill these challenges," he said.

"Providing safe and secure environment to women and weaker sections of the society will be our first priority. If criminal dare to fire bullets on police, then they will be dealt accordingly. Our first priority will be to arrest culprits," he added, while claiming that law and order situation in the state has improved recently.

When asked about the protests against the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's movie 'Padmaavat', he said that police will take right steps at the right time. Police will also work on reducing the response time to situations, he added.

Singh, a 1983 batch IPS officer, was born in Gaya, Bihar, in 1960; he has Masters in Political Science and Disaster Management. Apart from this, he also received an M Phil. from Madras University.

He has served as the SSP of Moradabad, Lakhimpur Kheri, Bulandshahr, Almora, Lucknow and Allahabad. In Lucknow, he has been SSP three times and has averted Shia-Sunni clashes many times. Apart from this, he has also served as the DIG of Azamgarh and Moradabad and the IG of Meerut Zone.

Singh was also awarded the Quality Excellence Award, 2017, for safety. Apart from this, he has also been honoured with the Indian Police Medal for Bravery, Indian Police Medal for Prestigious Service and Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service. Singh has also been honoured with the Extraordinary Contribution Award in 2006.

Apart from this, Singh has interest in writing and he has been writing articles in national newspapers and magazines for quite some time. He has also written a book on the earthquake in Nepal.​
