MANGALORE: Dakshina Kannada district is now likely to give its second chief minister. M Veerappa Moily, who ruled Karnataka from 1992 to 1994, was the first CM from the district.Compared to Moily, the present candidate, D V Sadananda Gowda, had lesser experience in politics and administration. No doubt, the BJP came to power in the state during the presidentship of Gowda. He has a good capacity to handle and organise party workers and events. But state administration will definitely be a real challenge for Gowda. Sadananda Gowda was the Puttur MLA for two terms from 1994 to 2004. From 1999 to 2004, he served as the deputy Opposition leader in the Assembly. He was elected an MP in 2004 from Mangalore and and then from Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency. He had the experience of heading the state party unit for nearly six years. Born on March 18, 1953, at Mandekolu in Sullia taluk, Gowda studied at Keyyur of Puttur taluk and also in Sullia. He is a science graduate from St Philomena College in Puttur and got his LLB degree in Vaikunta Baliga College of Law in Udupi. He was an ABVP activist during his student days. He started his legal career in 1976 in Sullia and Puttur. Later, he served as Public Prosecutor in Sirsi in Uttara Kannada for a short period. Then, he resigned to enter active politics. Gowda used to take part in Yakshagana plays during his college days. Games like Kho Kho, badminton and tennis were his other interests. He became the president of Mandekolu Cooperative Society in Sullia taluk. He never forgets the name of any party worker, and this has made him reach new heights in politics, says Rama Kadambalittaya, a close observer of Gowda from his native village. MP Nalin Kumar Kateel expresses happiness over Gowda’s candidature for the CM’s post.
