New Delhi: Anticipating more rush on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan and with its network now expanding across the national capital region (NCR), Delhi Metro will run 187 extra trips on its five corridors on Tuesday to cater to the additional commuters.
This is a steep increase from last year's 60 extra trips the Metro trains made on the day of Raksha Bandhan, which kept the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's (DMRC) cash registers ringing with over a million people opting for the new age transport system.
Trains will be run at peak-hour frequency from 8 am to 8.30 pm on Tuesday and 21 trains which are normally withdrawn from lines during off peak hours (12:30 pm to 04:30 pm) will be kept in service, DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said.
In all, including the 187 extra trips, Metro trains would make a total of 2,484 trips on Tuesday. Delhi Metro normally witnesses greater rush of commuters on the day of Raksha Bandhan as about one lakh additional passengers travel on that day every year. With Metro now connecting the satellite cities of Noida and Gurgaon with the national capital Delhi, the number is expected to increase.
To tackle the rush, the DMRC will also deploy more customer facilitation agents to help and guide commuters on Tuesday.
"Fifty-two more shifts of eight hours each have been arranged for this purpose," Dayal said. DMRC will deploy the extra personnel at over-crowded stations like Dilshad Garden, Shahdara, Shastri Park, Pitampura, Rohini East, Rithala, Jahangir Puri, Adarsh Nagar, GTB Nagar, Yamuna Bank, Uttam Nagar East, Nawada, Noida City Centre, Botanical Garden, Noida Sec-18 and Mundka.
Extra personnel will also be stationed to handle the increased load on the ticketing system. The Metro ticketing staff on 49 stations will also do additional shifts of a total of 624 hours.
The Delhi Metro traverses 125 kms spanning over 107 metro stations and ferries about 11 lakh people every day. By the time the Commonwealth Games start, another 60 kms will be added to the network, which will enable the DMRC to carry 20 lakh people per day.
