Held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles today morning (Indian standard time), the Emmys were full of surprises and awesome moments. We bring you the simplified highlights of the event, in case you're not an avid follower of Western television dramas.
Who's the host?
Seth Meyers is a one of those multi-faceted guys who's really good at comedy, writing scripts for comedy shows and hosting funny segments. His work is widely known on television.
Meyer was funny and surprisingly laid-back as the host for the Emmys this year. He let the actors and the ceremony take precedence over long stand-up routines. One of our favourite jokes of the day was when Meyer commented on the nominations received by the HBO series, 'Game of Thrones'.
"Congratulations to 'Game of Thrones', nominated for 19 Emmys, including Best Drama, Best Supporting Actor, and Worst Job Security. If you're an actor on Game of Thrones I bet you wait for next week's script the way most people wait for biopsy results. 'I think you better sit down; your character has been invited to a wedding'."
Big winner #1, 'Breaking Bad'
In case you didn't know, 'Breaking Bad' is about a chemistry teacher-turned-drug lord who creates and sells powerful methamphetamine (crystal meth) called "Blue" to wealth to junkies. He calls himself 'Walt' and gets together with a former student and runs this dangerous racket. The series won six Emmys -- best actor, best supporting actor, actress, best writing and outstanding drama series. Oh, and the series ended this year, so it was a sort of a final farewell.
Big winner # 2, 'Modern Family'
Presented in a mocumentary style, 'Modern Family' revolves around one such family with interesting dynamics. An elderly father with a young, exotic wife and a step son, one middle-aged daughter with her family, and one middle-aged son with a gay partner and an adopted Asian child. The series, which has consistently making waves at the Emmys, won three awards this time: best direction, best supporting actor and outstanding comedy series.
Who is Sheldon Cooper?
We know you've been living under a rock, so we're gonna explain this to you as well. Sheldon Cooper is a character from the immensely popular series, 'The Big Bang Theory'. Played by Jim Parsons, Sheldon Cooper has sort of become a "geek god" with his dry humour, ready wit and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Parsons won the Emmy for best actor in a leading role, comedy.
The 'Sherlock' effect
Based on the works by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, 'Sherlock' is one of the many adaptations of the world's most popular fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes. But this BBC adaptation starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman is a modern spin-off from the series, that has achieved a modern cult status. 'Sherlock' won three Emmys this time -- best writing (miniseries), best supporting actor and best actor.
The Cumbercollective
No, that's not the official name for the Benedict Cumberbatch fans. The ladies like to call themselves something more graphic, but for all intents and purposes, we'll stick to this name. Cumberbatch, with his acting prowess, only cemented his position as one of the most sought-after actors in the industry right now.
Goodbye Robin Williams
Noted actor Billy Crystal bid a final adieu to noted comedian Robin Williams, who passed away last week. "It's very hard to talk about him in the past, he was so present in all our lives...for 40 years, he was the brightest star in the comedy galaxy," said Crystal in an emotional speech.
A fitting promo for the dramatic Emmys
Have you guys seen the the pawn shop spoof starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul that was filmed to build buzz around the Emmys? Fantastically directed and acted, the video drew more laughs than than many performances during the ceremony.
