New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government over the arrest of Dalit scholar Kanwal Bharti and has sought an explanation. The Dalit scholar was arrested for slamming Samajwadi Party government on Facebook over the suspension of IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal.
Bharti had on a Facebook post said that the Samajwadi Party has become blind to people's problems in their lust for power. The Dalit scholar was arrested on August 6 on the basis of an FIR filed by UP minister and senior SP leader Azam Khan's aide.
Bharti had also claimed that he was receiving threat from Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan. "I am still being threatened by Azam Khan's men. I believe they are waiting for a chance to attack me," he had claimed.
On his arrest, Bharti had alleged that he was falsefully implicated by the SP leader for speaking the truth. "I didn't make any offensive comment. Azam Khan is trying to give my words a communal tone. He is a minister who is bent on stirring up trouble between Hindus and Muslims," he had added.
Bharti had, however, claimed that he will not bow down to pressure tactics and will continue his battle in a legal way. "I will fight this battle in a legal way and take Azam Khan to High Court if necessary," he had added.
Durga Shakti Nagpal, the 28-year-old SDM of Gautam Budh Nagar, who led the crackdown on sand mining mafia in her district, was suspended on July 27 ostensibly for ordering the demolition of the wall allegedly without following the due process.
