THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Parents’ Forum, an organisation formed by the parents of ICSE and CBSE students who had appeared for the engineering entrance examination, alleged that their children were denied equal opportunities in the normalisation process adopted for admissions. They submitted petitions to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan on the issue on Wednesday. They also held discussions with Higher Education Principal Secretary Tom Jose and Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) B S Mavoji. The normalisation process was necessary as students of more than 30 boards attended the entrance examinations. This year’s entrance examination was the first one to be held after the government decided to give equal weightage for marks obtained in the qualifying examination and the entrance examination.Parents’ Forum representative Dr Sanil Kumar told mediapersons that the normalisation process had done injustice to students from CBSE and ICSE streams by denying them equal opportunities. The Entrance Reforms Committee had recommended that the marks of internal evaluation, practical examinations and grace marks should not be considered for normalisation. However, this recommendation was not followed, he said. There is a huge difference in internal evaluation marks among the various streams of Plus-II courses. In the Kerala Higher Secondary stream, grace marks were awarded to 23,360 students. However, the CBSE and ICSE students have no grace mark system, Sanil Kumar said.
