HYDERABAD:  The state government’s decision to allow failed Inter second year students to write improvement exams even for a single subject and advancing the supplementary examinations came as a big relief to the students, who failed in physics examination.Unlike previous years, the state government has decided to allow the second year students to write improvement exam even for a single paper like the first year students. Earlier, a second year student wishes to write improvement exams had to write all the papers. With this relaxation the candidates who have failed or who got less marks in physics can write the exam again. The government has taken the decision following protests from parents and students as about 1.44 lakh candidates of the total 4.2 lakh failed in physics alone. Those who passed also got very poor marks in physics. The supplementary examinations which were to start from May 23 will now be held from May 16. The last date for applying  for supplementary examination has been also advanced to May 3 instead of May 5 as announced earlier, secondary education minister K. Parthasarathy said on Thursday. The state government has also decided to hold physics exam on the first day itself. The results will be announced early so that  the students do not lose their academic year and would be able to appear for all entrance tests. Those students who appear for physics exam  will be issued marks memo immediately so that they would be eligible for Eamcet, counselling and other competitive tests. The decision was taken purely on  humanitarian grounds to help failed students clear the subject. The minister  clarified that this was not done under the pressure from corporate colleges or others but with an idea that failed students should not lose a precious year.Parthasarathy said the state government  thought of giving grace marks to the failed candidates as demanded by the students and parents but after a detailed exercise,  found that such a measure would not be of much use to them as the number of students who would benefit would be less. The minister said if one grace mark is given nobody would pass, if two marks were given only three students will pass and if five marks are given only about 1,100 students will pass. He reiterated that the question paper was  flawless as all questions were within the framework of the prescribed textbook. He said that some vested interests were carrying the propaganda that some questions in the paper were not from the syllabus.
