HYDERABAD: The sight of soaring kites cheers up everybody, well almost. The glass-coated string or manja used to fly kites, pose a danger to our feathered friends. As a part of a campaign to save hundreds of birds from being maimed during Sankranti, the animal welfare group Caring Hands For Animals (CHFA) has launched a campaign to raise awareness about the issue.Padmaja Bundla, president of CHFA, says, “Since this is also the season when migratory birds visit the region, many of them are injured and their wings and feet get tangled in the sharp manja string. We request the people to use regular string which is not coated with glass. The Chinese manja commonly available is worse as it cuts deeper and cannot be cut easily.”The Chinese manja is made of nylon and difficult for the birds to cut when they entangle in it.The organization will display a slide on the ill-effects of using manja in 100 theatres across the twin cities over the fortnight. They will also distribute fliers and posters to spread the message.Responsible citizens can rush an injured bird to the nearest vet or contact CHFA on 9701948888/ 9642057881.
