CHENNAI: A 40-year-old lineman working with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board was electrocuted as power supply unexpectedly resumed while he was repairing a transformer in Chetpet on Saturday. Shiva of Minjur was repairing a transformer at McNichols Road near Chetpet bridge along with colleague Arjunan (50) on Saturday morning when the mishap took place.EB officials said that the linemen had disconnected power to the transformer, which has an input capacity of 11,000 volts, before the repair work. However, power supply suddenly resumed, resulting in electric shock to the duo.At around 11 am, Shiva, who was repairing the transformer sitting on an iron bar, collapsed after sustaining an electric shock while Arjunan was thrown away, police sources said.Fire personnel from Kilpauk were immediately alerted by the public, who brought Shiva down from the transformer. He was taken to Kilpauk Medical Hospital where he was declared brought dead. Arjunan was admitted to a private hospital. Chetpet police have registered a case under section 174 (unnatural death) and are investigating.“We are investigating how the electricity supply suddenly resumed though the linemen disconnected power supply before they started work. Arjunan does not have any external injuries,” said a police official.EB officials said that Shiva was wearing his safety gear and the sudden power supply could have been a leakage from a powerful generator used in a factory. “We had also informed through newspapers that supply would be cut from 9 am and it was supposed to have resumed only by 3 pm. There was no way that it was supply from the EB. The lineman was fixing nuts and bolts in the transformer,” said an EB official.
