CHENNAI: A four-member gang, armed with deadly weapons and on a murder mission, was arrested at TP Chatram on Monday. A special police team was conducting vehicular checking at East Club Road-Cemetry Road junction around 4.30 pm. “We stopped an autorickshaw with four men for checking,” he said. “All the four were armed with broad-blade knives,” said a police official.On seeing the cops, two of them got down and tried to flee, while a third man swung the knife at an sub-inspector, he said. All the four were chased and overpowered. They were arrested and taken to T P police station, where they were identified as S Thangaraj of Padi, T Kartik of Anna Nagar, S Ramadoss of T P Chatram and S Manikandan (24) of VOC Nagar.Grilled, the quartet reportedly confessed to have been on their way to a TNHB building in the area to murder a rival, the inspector said. All the four men were produced before the Egmore court, which remanded them in judicial custody. Hindu Munnani Activists Released Around 90 activists of Hindu Munnani were arrested while trying to take a Vinayaga Chathurthi procession through a banned area in Triplicane on Sunday. The activists, carrying seven idols, were being led by the outfit’s president Ramagopalan. The procession, which started from Thiruvoteeswaran Temple in Zam Bazaar, was making its way through Triplicane High Road towards Ice House mosque, a banned route. Police swooped on the activists and arrested them. They were later released. Rowdy Assaults Constable, Escapes A history-sheeter attacked a constable with a knife and inflicted cut injuries and took to his heels at Chetpet on Monday. Sources said Balaji (40), was reportedly quarrelling with his neighbour, when other residents informed the police who rushed to the spot. On seeing them, Balaji attacked a head constable and escaped. The constable was admitted to a private hospital. Police are searching for Balaji.
