CHENNAI: A 40-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run incident on Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) on Sunday night.Police sources said the victim, V Murugan, a resident of Panaiyur, worked as a gardener in a farmhouse in the locality. On Sunday, around 8pm, he was crossing the road when an unidentified vehicle knocked him down and sped away. Murugan died on the spot.Woman Sets Herself AfireA young woman set herself ablaze after a verbal altercation with her husband at Egmore on Sunday. With 55 per cent burn injuries, she is battling for life in hospital. Sources said S Ammulu (27) was a pavement dweller and sold toys on the platform opposite the Egmore Women and Children’s Hospital. She had borrowed money for her business but could not make the repayment. When the matter went to her husband Selvaraj, he scolded her and there was a verbal altercation between the couple.In a fit of rage, Ammulu doused her body with kerosene and set herself ablaze. She was admitted with 55 percent burns at Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMCH) and her condition is stated to be serious.RDO Inquiry intoDeath of Newlywed An inquiry by a Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO)  was conducted into the death of a 17-year-old girl who was found hanging at her house in Pudupet on Sunday. R Nandini of Ayyasamy Street in Varadarajapuram married Raji (18) three months ago, a police officer said. On Sunday morning, her mother invited the young couple to her house in Pulianthope, but Raji claimed that he had work and promised to visit later. When he returned in the evening, Nandini picked up a quarrel with him and he went out again. On returning two hours later, he found that she had hanged herself inside the house. An RDO enquiry ruled it to be a case of suicide.33 Held for GamblingThe Washermenpet police arrested 33 persons on charges of gambling on Sunday. The arrested persons included Padmarupan (67) and Sathish (25).Jewels StolenBurglars decamped with 10 sovereigns of gold jewels from a house at Sholinganallur. C Mahendran (32) of Pillayar Koil Street, who works in a private factory, was at his mother-in-law’s house in Ashok Nagar with his family. On returning to his house,  he found the jewels stolen.
