Madhya Pradesh: Babu Lal Gaur can hope to keep the Chief Minister's chair in Madhya Pradesh for a few more days. The BJP parliamentary board will meet on Saturday to decide on Gaur's replacement.
But the BJP leadership in Delhi is keen to resolve the issue in a week's time before the winter session of the state Assembly begins.
Gaur has already been given enough hints that the Chief Minister's job is not going to be his and so he knows his days are numbered. "I believe in God," Gaur says.
Gaur's only solace at the moment is that BJP leader Uma Bharti is not coming back.
After engineering a rebellion against him, Uma Bharti is now desperate to keep out another contender?prominent 'young' backward caste leader Shiv Raj Singh Chauhan.
Though a section of the party leaders in Delhi favour Chauhan for his maturity, his chances may be fast receding as well.
Supporters of Uma Bharti, known for her unpredictable temperament, feel if she cannot succeed Gaur, she should at least be involved in the search for a successor.
Chauhan has found support in central leaders like Pramod Mahajan, Sushma Swaraj and Sanjay Joshi.
However, others, including A B Vajpayee, Advani and Jaswant Singh, want to consult party MLAs before taking a decision to avoid confrontation with the state unit.
Now, the party leaders have extended the list of possible contenders and several BJP leaders in Bhopal have suddenly begun eyeing the CM's job.
