BANGALORE: The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) plans to increase the penalty amount on cattle owners, who let cattle stroll on streets. Based on public’s complaints on cows, calves and sheep, which stated that animals were causing accidents across many parts in the city, BBMP now plans to increase the penalty amount, which was last revised in 1991. The Animal Husbandry Department sent a proposal to the commissioner to increase the penalty amount.  “The new penalty would be Rs 250 per stray calf and Rs 500 per stray cattle, which is presently Rs 50 and Rs 100 respectively,” an official said. Apart from this, the cattle owners will have to pay the amount spent by the department on fodder till the release of the cattle. The penalty amount is valid only for three days and from the fourth day, additional amount will be collected. This responsibility fell on Animal Husbandry Department last November. “We have penalised 1,044 cattle since April 2011 and have collected penalty of Rs 70, 113,” Dr Parvez Ahmed Piran said. When asked about identifying the owners, Piran said that they would collect letter and identity letter from the owners. However, he agreed there was no proper procedure to identify the cattle owners.According to Parvez Ahmed Piran, cattle rearing in Bangalore was an age old tradition and had been in existence from many years. Cattle rearing most is common in places like Ulsoor, Lingarajpuram, Fraser Town and Paravathipura.
