The state government is in a dilemma over increasing the tuition fees for engineering courses as demanded by private colleges.
With the number of seats being more and the takers fewer, private college managements are demanding an increase in the fee ranging from 40 per cent to 150 per cent to be financially viable.
But the government could not take a decision in this regard as increasing the fee in private engineering colleges would burden both the government and students.
At a meeting held by chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy with deputy chief minister Damodar Rajanarasimha and officials here on Friday, the demand for increase in fee came up.
If the government accords permission for fee hike, it will have to spend Rs 100 crore more on the fee-reimbursement scheme.
Besides, there are legal hurdles.
A case is pending before the Apex Court on fee hike and it will be heard on July 24.
So the government decided to wait for some more time.
A proposal also came up at Friday’s meeting that if the government increased the college fee, it should limit the fee-reimbursement to Rs 30,000 and ask the student to bear the remaining fee of Rs 10,000 or Rs 20,000 as the case may be.
If the government fixes a maximum limit, it will not go well with weaker sections.
