Engagement between the two countries will continue

New Delhi: Pakistan on Thursday welcomed the Indian "focus on terrorism" but said “one incident”--the November 2008 terror attacks on Mumbai --should not hold the countries hostage.

He said his country's "number one priority is to deal with terrorism".

"We have suffered hundreds of Mumbais. This is something that has come to us from across the border (with Afghanistan)," he said.

"India put a considerable focus on terrorism. We welcome this. I did point that terrorism is a global issue, regional issue and local issue," Pakistani Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir told reporters after meeting his Indian counterpart Nirupama Rao here.

He said the "elements who have proliferated over the years and have no respect for borders...need to be exterminated".

Bashir said his country was "determined to succeed in overcoming this menace of terrorism".

"As far as the issue of Mumbai is concerned, Pakistan has done everything that was proper and could be done," Bashir said, adding that both countries agree on the need to fight terror.
