Central Vigilance Commissioner R Sri Kumar has urged members from the science and technology community to come forward and help the Central Vigilance Commission’s (CVC) Project Vigeye, an anti-graft programme.
Delivering a lecture on the project at the Indian Institute of Science, Sri Kumar said Vigeye can reach out to more people if it can be made compatible to function on many more technology platforms.
“So far, the Vigeye application works on Symbian phones and another 100 simple handsets. We need to reach out to Black Berry and A n d r o i d p l a t f o r m users, so we can initiate a combined effort to check on corruption. That is why I am here to seek the help of technology experts,” he said.
“The idea is to involve citizens and empower them. All you need is a GPRS-enabled mobile phone. However, to take this project further, we need support. CVC functions with 305 people, and the number of central government establishments to be covered is more than 3,000,” Sri Kumar said.
He also invited volunteers to work for Vigeye and spread awareness about the project.
“There are 6 lakh villages. If we can have one lakh volunteers, we can bring about change, even if it is as simple as reporting civic issues. We can create a movement,” he said.
According to statistics from the Vigeye website, there are 8,173 registered users with 1,433 complaints filed through mobile phones and web.
Dues from CWG
The Central Vigilance Committee, which is probing misappropriation of funds during the 19th Commonwealth Games (CWG) held in the country in 2010, has helped tax authorities recover about Rs 150 crore of pending statutory deductions.
“We found that statutory deductions from various contracts had not been done, such as income tax, service tax, labour cess, works contract taxes and so on. About Rs 1,000 crore has not been paid out of Rs 15,000 crore. We asked the tax authorities to verify it. After notices were issues, about Rs 150 crore has come back,” said Vigilance Commissioner R Sri Kumar.
