Jammu: A high alert was sounded in Jammu region as three militants who intruded into the Indian territory from the Kana Chack sector from across the international border early Tuesday remained untraced, officials said.
"A high alert has been sounded in the Jammu due to the infiltration of three terrorists from across the international border. Security forces have launched a massive search operation in the entire area," Inspector General of Police (Jammu zone) K Rajendra said in the evening.
He appealed to people to help the police in checking and frisking. He also advised them to remain alert and inform the movement of any stranger to the police control room in Jammu, a release issued by the police headquarters here said.
Personnel from the army, Border Security Force (BSF) and the Jammu and Kashmir police launched a massive manhunt for the militants, who entered the Indian territory at Kanachak along the international border, 20 km north of here, after cutting the barbed wire fence.
"This is a serious situation," said a BSF official. The intruders sneaked into the Indian side under the cover of fire provided "most probably by the Pakistani Rangers", the official said.
The fire fight lasted for nearly two hours until 2 am.
Security agencies are worried in view of the situation in Jammu.
People here have been holding rallies demanding the return of 40 hectares of government land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB). They plan a huge rally Wednesday at the Parade ground which can accommodate tens of thousands to give a momentum to their agitation, already in the 57th day Tuesday.
