New Delhi: Former world number one Martina Hingis beat Serbia's Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 6-2 to win a record fifth Pan Pacific Open title on Sunday.
Hingis wrapped up the one-sided final in 71 minutes to capture her third singles title since returning full-time to the WTA Tour in 2006.
Meanwhile, Maria Sharapova had to retire during the second set of her semifinal against Ana Ivanovic because of a hamstring injury. After dropping the first set 6-1, the Russian star consulted with her trainer and then decided to retire.
"Yeah, I got a left hamstring strain during the match. I've been tight with it for the last couple of weeks with it, but nothing major after a Grand Slam, you're bound to be a little bit sore," Sharapova said after retiring from the semi-final.
"In the second game of the match today, after jumping off my serve and landing on my left foot, I felt a sharper pain than I'd felt before and it didn't ease up after that. I tried to keep going, but against someone like Ana, it's difficult not to be at your top in order top beat her," Sharapove added.
