Hyderabad hostage drama ends, constable frees SP
The constable, identified as Giriprasad Sarma, had threatened to set the SP on fire if his suspension was not revoked.

Hyderabad: The officer of the Superintendent of Police rank, who was held hostage by a head constable on Wednesday evening in Hyderabad, was freed after five hours of drama.

The head constable, identified as Giriprasad Sarma, had held Lakshmi Narayana, the Superintendent of Police (Transport) hostage, and had even threatened to set him on fire if his demand was not fulfilled.

The constable had demanded that his suspension be revoked. The head constable was suspended six months ago for irregularities. Reportedly, he even went to the Lokayukta for his reinstatement, but his plea was rejected.

Sarma, who accused the SP and other senior police officials of harassing him and suspending him, had sought disciplinary action against Lakshmi Narayana.

He had spoken to a local Telugu news channel and put forth the demand.

A senior police officer had said they were looking into the demand and added "a fair inquiry will be conducted and we request Sarma to immediately release the SP. We are talking to him."

Police force in strength was deployed at the spot.
