The Iraqi govt said 14 convicted terrorists were executed for murder, kidnappings and rape on Sunday.

Baghdad: The Iraqi government said 14 convicted terrorists were executed on Sunday for murder, kidnappings and rape in five of Iraq's 18 provinces, the government said in a statement.

The statement did not say when or where the suspects were convicted. It also did not specify the method of execution, although hanging is the method used in Iraq for civilians sentenced to death.

The 14 were involved in murder, kidnappings and rape in the provinces of Karbala, Basra, Wasit and Diwaniyah, all south of Baghdad, and Kirkuk in northern Iraq, according to the statement.

It identified one of those executed as Zanoun Younis Salim, who it said was responsible for the death of hundreds of people. A second man was identified as Ahmed Hamed Hassan, who allegedly bombed a mosque south of Baghdad, killing 65 people and wounding scores.

"The imposition of the law is something that we will never go back on," the government said in a statement. "The innocent people in our beloved provinces will see the princes of butchery drop oneafter the other with the help of God."

The language used by the statement suggested that all 14 were likely Sunni insurgents or members of al-Qaida in Iraq, the country's most feared terrorist group.
