Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir government has set up 88 mulberry nurseries to cater to the demand of farmers for mulberry plants in the Jammu province.
"88 mulberry nurseries have been set up which will cater to the demand of farmers for mulberry plants in the province", an official of sericulture department on Wednesday said.
He said that under centrally-sponsored schemes, 4.53 lakh of mulberry plants were distributed to 2836 farmers, 576 beneficiaries were provided incentive for construction of rearing houses and 960 beneficiaries were provided rearing equipments.
In Jammu province 20,010 silkworm rearers have adopted the silkworm rearing during 2013-14 and produced 675 m tons of cocoon and farmers earned revenue amounting to Rs 12.50 crore, the official said.
He said that efforts are being made to flourish sericulture in temperate areas for which polygreen houses are introduced for raising of mulberry plants.
