Jungle rule: Lovers flogged to death
A woman and her borther-in-law were flogged to death as a punishment for allegedly having an illicit relationship.

Simdega (Jharkhand): A barbaric diktat in a remote Jharkhand village claimed two lives on Monday.

A couple was flogged to death as a punishment for allegedly having an illicit relationship in the Simdega district of the state.

The couple – Jasmine Mundain and her brother-in-law Kushal Lugun – were tied to a tree and beaten to death and their bodies were buried at the behest of the Teensongra Gram Panchayat.

What was more horrifying than perhaps the incident itself was the fact that the villagers, too, approved of the punishment and kept the killing under wraps for nearly 48 hours.

“They were tied to a tree and beaten up and then buried. The villagers killed them because they suspected an illicit relationship between the two victims," Nibhranjan Jojobar, a local tribal leader, said.

The police, too, were laid-back and began their investigation two days after the gruesome incident.

“One person has been arrested and we are still investigating. 12 people have been named in the case," Saket Kumar Singh, SP, Simdega, said

Incidents like these drive home the point that in rural India, even in this day and age, the rule of law is undermined by the rule of the jungle.
