KANCHEEPURAM: The Kanchi taluk police nabbed two robbers who were also chain snatchers. They had unleashed terror in Kancheepuram, particularly among women. The criminals — Karthik (23), and Rajesh (31) robbed people and sped away on motorbikes. Sometimes they brandished knives before robbing their victims. With this modus operandi, they robbed Selvam (30) of `300 at Kalakattur road junction near Uthiramerur, at 8.30 AM on July 1. Selvam filed a complaint at the nearby Magaral Police station. A special team was formed comprising inspector S Saravanan, sub-inspectors Tulasi Narayanan, Madhavan and Chellapillai. At 2 pm on the same day, the team stopped two men on motorbikes near Ponnerikarai on the Chennai-Bangalore Highway and they turned out to be the culprits.Investigations revealed their bikes — a Hero Honda Splendor, and a Hero Honda Shine — had been stolen from Potheri SRM Hospital, and Karanai about 45 days ago. The police recovered 35 sovereigns of gold including a 10-sovereign mangalsutra, a few mobile phones and kitchen knives. Both were remanded and sent to Vellore Central Prison. DSP K Rajendhran said that based on information from the criminals, the gold was recovered from a pawn broker. Despite the police instructing them not to accept mortgages without verifying the antecedents, several pawn brokers had disregarded the advice. As per the jurisprudence, once the conviction is pronounced, a case will be filed under Section 411 (Dishonestly receiving stolen property) against the pawn brokers, the DSP told Express. The recovered goods would be handed over to the owners on Monday. They would have to reproduce the recovered items during trial, he explained.
