Panic spread across the city after four-year-old Manjunath was mauled to death by stray dogs on Wednesday evening.

New Delhi: Panic spread across the city after four-year-old Manjunath was mauled to death by stray dogs on Wednesday evening in Bangalore’s BEML layout.

The Health Minister R Ashok was prompt in announcing a compensation package of 1 lakh rupees for the victim's family.

Karnataka government has also announced an eight-point programme to end the problem withing a month.

The Bruhut Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has identified 48 areas under three zones where the menace was more and stringent action would be initiated.

"We are going to catch 600 stray dogs everyday,” said Ashok. However, animal rights activists argue that this may not be the ideal solution.

Three months ago, the government had promised to capture 600 dogs a day after nine-year-old Sridevi, the daughter of a daily wage labourer, lost her life due to deadly stray dog menace.

But authorities agree that rounding up 70,000 dogs in the city will not be an easy task. Attendant problems including illegal meat shops also need to be dealt with.

The state government had no permission to kill dogs under the existing laws. However, the State Government would seek the Centre to suitably amend the laws in this regard, PTI quoted Ashok as saying.

He assured that public places such as railway stations, religious places, markets and bus stands would be guarded against the menace.

The state government has roped in Kempe Gowda Institute of Medical Sciences to conduct an in depth study of stray dogs and submit a report by March-end. The Government would initiate follow up action after receiving the report.
