Keeping the city green
Green space in Chennai is slowly disappearing and professionals are pushing residents to plant precious trees...

CHENNAI: On World Environment Day, the wish of every person in the city would be to see a greener Chennai. Although there are many small islands of green in Chennai, they are fast being taken over by some project or other.Trees which fall down due to storms or other reasons are not replaced. Saplings planted during plantation drives do not have enough water, or just wither away.Ace music director Vijay Antony extended his support towards this cause by attending the “Make Green” campaign on Sunday.Launched by Vijay Shanthi Builders Limited, it was a sapling plantation drive. Vijay says that the thing most required these days in city life is greenery.“We go to Ooty and Kodaikanal and other hill stations for a change of scenery and to see plants. But that should be available right here in our city,” he said.Vijay also said, “Bangalore is called the Garden city. I think that if every person in Chennai plants at least 10 saplings in and around their house and nurtures it, then our city will become the next garden city. That would be a wonderful thing.” Chandan Jain, Joint MD of Vijay Shanthi, was also present. Speaking about the importance of greenery, and the role of builders in creating a suitable infrastructure, he said, “A lot of builders are into green buildings now.In fact, going green is a big advantage. We want everyone to take this seriously, and plant saplings wherever they can.” He also added that landscaping has always been a major part of all Vijay Shanthi projects.Chandan also said that future projects of his company will be planned as green buildings. “So far in Chennai only office buildings and tech parks have been constructed as green buildings. There has been no residential or commercial construction with that distinction yet, but we are working on changing that soon,” he explained. The drive was inaugurated at the The New Indian Express, Ambattur.V Natarajan, VP-Marketing, and K Madan Mohan, DGM, were present.Saplings were planted and watered to mark the start of the plantation drive.
