Christchurch: New Zealand Cricket have reacted cautiously to their Indian counterpart's request to be on standby to play the proposed tri-series in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur next month.
India, Australia and the West Indies are to play the series tentatively from September 15 to 29 in the lead up to the ICC Champions Trophy to be held in India.
West Indies' participation was yet to be confirmed though, with the WICB discussing the proposal with the players' representatives.
"We have only just received that request. I have not even had time to work through it," NZC Chief Executive Martin Snedden was quoted as saying in New Zealand Herald.
The report said Snedden described the Indian initiative as "a reasonably vague approach".
Australia have given their consent, saying the matches would help them tune up to the prestigious Champions Trophy.
New Zealand, however, have not played a ODI since March and they last played a Test in May.
Of course, if the Caribbeans agreed to play, the invitation to the Kiwis would become automatically invalid.
