The job is all about saving and safeguarding life and property.Job opportunities in fire safety is on the rise as there are many areas like defence forces, Railways, Airport Authority of India, Electricity Board, CISF, ONGC, mines refineries, petrochemical complexes and municipal bodies looking for skilled professional.“The demand for the course is increasing rapidly. Professionals are required for this job according to law and so skilled candidates have enough openings,” said Prasanna Suresh, trainer, National Institute of Fire and Safety, Kochi. There are a number of courses in fire safety and the basic qualification for most is Plus- Two. You can take up a degree, diploma, post-graduate diploma, advanced diploma or a certificate course. The major institutes that offer courses in fire safety include National Institute of Fire Management in Chennai and College of Fire Technology in Gujarat, Safety Engineering and Security Management in Pune, International Institute of Fire Engineering, National Centre for Professional Training in Kerala, Institute of Fire and Safety Technology (IFAST) in Kochi, Indian Institute of Fire Engineering in New Delhi, National Institute of Fire and Safety (NIFE) in Kochi, Institution of Fire Engineers in New Delhi and National Fire Academy in Vadodara. “There are plenty of opportunities in India and abroad, especially West Asia,” said Prasanna. The job opportunities in fire safety are not limited to public and private sectors, one can choose to become an independent fire consultant or a fire surveyor also. Besides that you may also opt for an entrepreneurial career or a business of safety equipment, fire equipment, installation of fire detection and manufacturer of safety and suppression system. “At entry level the remuneration is about Rs 15,000 in India and in abroad it is Rs 40,000,” said Prasanna.
