BANGALORE: The state government on Thursday started the process of finding the new Lokayukta with Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda writing letters to opposition leaders of both the houses of legislature asking them to suggest names for the coveted post.Letters have been sent to opposition leader in the Assembly Siddaramaiah and his counterpart in the Council Motamma and both the leaders were asked to suggest names on or before October 11. Gowda in his letter has not mentioned or suggested anybody’s name. The anti-corruption wing has been functioning without a head ever since Justice Shivaraj V Patil resigned as the Lokayukta on September 19 following allegations of flouting housing society norms while acquiring two sites. Patil held the office just for 47 days.Confirming the receipt of the letter, Motamma said that she had urged the CM to convene a meeting of the selection panel comprising opposition leaders and presiding officers of both the houses to discuss the issue. The government has to consult the chief justice of Karnataka High Court also before finalising the name.Unlike his predecessor B S Yeddyurappa, Gowda is said to be treading cautiously on the issue as he is not ready to drag himself into any controversy. Yeddyurappa was accused of acting unilaterally while appointing Justice Patil. Instead of asking the selection committee members to suggest names of their choice, Yeddyurappa dashed off a letter containing three names of his choice and asked members to agree on one of the names.VOICE OF DISSENT AGAINST YEDDYURAPPA GROWS SHRILLEREven as the legal noose is tightening around former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa who is facing several corruption charges, his detractors within the BJP are gearing up to create more embarrassment for him by launching a campaign called “Brashtachar Hatao, BJP Bachao”. Coming under a platform called as Karnataka BJP Seniors’ Forum, former state BJP president B B Shivappa, Urimajalu Ram Bhat, former MLA Shakuntala Shetty, Vinayachandra, T Govindappa — all detractors of Yeddyurappa — have convened a meeting at a hotel here on October 8 to discuss about their proposed campaign. The meeting will focus on two main issues — alleged corruption in the government and the negligence of senior leaders and party workers by the present state leadership. The conveners have requested the participation of senior BJP leaders from all districts.
