Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on Sunday said that the upcoming Lok Sabha polls would be a straight contest of secular and communal forces. "The Congress-led UPA government has implemented several welfare measures in the last 10 years.

The Left parties' blind opposition to Congress will only help BJP. "As a result, the Lok Sabha polls will see a straight contest between the secular and communal forces," he told reporters in Kerala. Chennithala, who is also the KPCC President, was speaking at a meet-the-press programme entitled 'Delhi Chalo', organised by Calicut Press Club in Kerala.

A favourable political climate prevails in Kerala for the Congress-led United Democratic Front, he said, adding that the various welfare policies implemented by the state government would be of help at the LS polls. "UDF is confident of achieving a thumping victory in the elections," he said.

Lashing out at CPM, he alleged that its wrong policies had turned the people away and added that the party had 'failed' to function as an effective opposition. Over the question of his successor in the post of the Kerala Congress chief, Chennithala said that the Congress High Command would soon take a decision on the matter.

On a query related to the Revolutionary Marxist Party leader Chandrasekharan murder probe, he said police had done a commendable job in that regard. Earlier, Chennithala met some Indian Union Muslim League leaders.
