BHUBANESWAR: Veterinary surgeons have called for initiation of immediate steps for making the profession lucrative enough to draw more and more trained personnel into the field. An acute shortage of vets is having an adverse impact on development of livestock and affecting the production of dairy and poultry products and meat though the demand for these is increasing by leaps and bounds. There are huge vacancies at the level of veterinary surgeons across the State and the situation is particularly severe in the tribal belts. Over 70 per cent of vet posts in KBK are lying vacant, according to the Orissa Veterinary Association (OVA). Raising the issue during a function organised to celebrate the World Veterinary Year 2011, the Association pressed for increasing the salary of veterinary professionals at the entry level. In over 25 states, the entry level posts for veterinary professionals are graded in Junior Class I. But Orissa still has to raise its position. Even trained veterinary graduates are opting for other sectors, OVA general secretary Muktikanta Bhuyan rued. Secretary, Fisheries and Animal Resources Development, Satyabrata Sahoo agreed and stated the Government was taking steps to address the problems. Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Director Dr Benudhar Das and OVA president Dr Tanmay Mohanty were present.
