New Delhi: Frustrated over not getting compensation, a young man on Sunday allegedly tried to immolate himself at a Samajwadi Party rally at Mahoba in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Maniram Nai of Kulpahar area was apparently sore over attitude of the state government for not awarding compensation to farmers who suffered heavy losses due to drought. He sustained 60 per cent burn injuries in the attempt.

Maniram was immediately rushed to the district hospital, from where he was referred to Jhansi, PTI said referring police sources.

Yadav, who is facing a threat of president’s rule in the state following disqualification of defector BSP MLAs, later announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 for treatment of the injured and Rs 2 crore for the aggrieved farmers of the region.

Another BSP leader and former minister Bashiruddin joined Samajwadi Party on Sunday during the rally.
