CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation has stepped up their plastic collection drive, to ensure the city gets their share of better roads, quicker. After their cash-for-plastic scheme met with reasonable success, plastic collection through conservancy workers was started off at the Ripon Buildings on Wednesday. The first plastic collected was deposited into the large red bins by Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy, Deputy Mayor Benjamin and Corporation Commissioner PWC Davidar. All this has been done to collect 800 tonnes of low micron plastic (bags and wrappers) so that it will be mixed with bitumen and used in relaying of damaged roads. So far the collection has yielded a little more than 112 tonnes, as reported, and this drive is expected to help them achieve the target faster. These plastic bins have been placed across the city. Also, all the waste collection or conservancy workers will have a separate collection bag to rustle up this usable plastic waste.
