Melbourne: Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath says he still has a ruthless desire of a youngster to take more and more wickets to cross the 600 mark in Test and 400 in the One-Day competition.
"As long as things are going well at home, things are all right there, at the moment I'll keep playing," Mcgrath said.
"To watch the World Cup soccer it showed that the desire is still in there burning away. I watched every game. It was amazing. You know if it is or it isn't there, and for me, I know it is," he was quoted as saying by Sydney Morning Herald.
The 36-year-old, who has picked 542 wickets in Test and 331 in ODIs, said he was not worried about his opening slot in the team, especially in the face of the strong challenge presented by Stuart Clark.
"I've never felt under pressure to hold my spot. If you're thinking about what the guys behind you are doing, you're not doing your job. When I come back, if they're good enough to hold me out, good luck to them. That's how I got my chance. But I'll be working hard to get back.
"It's up to the selectors... (but) once you get out to the middle, it's up to the captain. I think I'll have to start taking the captain out for a few more lunches and inviting him around for dinner more often."
McGrath insists "international cricket is easy compared to full-time parenting" and "I'm looking forward to getting back to playing so I can take a break from it all."
It's at about this point one begins to wonder why McGrath, who surely has nothing left to prove in Test or One-Day cricket, is bothering to come back at all.
