TIRUCHY: The usual fun and joy on Valentine’s Day was missing this year at Mukkombu, the lovers’ paradise in Rock City. Thanks to some serious action by cops who barred lovers from entering the most sought after picnic spot near Tiruchy.Youths in the city were in for a rude shock on Tuesday when police manning the Upper Anaicut or Mukkombu, barred lovers from entering the picnic spot. Mukkombu, situated about 18 km from the city is the paradise for lovers in the Rock City. However, lovers who visited the spot were disappointed as police guarding the entrance were verifying whether the couples were married and turned away those who were not married. Even on normal days, a number of love-lorn couples can be spotted at this place. On special occasions like Valentine’s Day, their number will be high around the dam and the adjacent areas. This time police played spoilsport for unmarried lovers, stationing a patrol vehicle at the entrance of Mukkombu. The police allowed only those couples who had ‘thali’ (mangal sutra). Those who were without ‘thali’ were not allowed inside the park. “We are deputed here on special duty and have been instructed to allow only families inside the park. We have been staying here since 7 am”, said a police woman on duty.
