BHUBANESWAR: The onset of a gruelling summer was signalled by the soaring mercury level in the State Capital where maximum day temperature went past 40 degrees for the first time this season on Sunday. The temperature bar read 40.1 degrees Celsius in Bhubaneswar. With south westerly wind bringing in the heat from across Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, the summer seems to have arrived well in advance. Only twice in the last 10 years has February seen 40-plus temperature __ in 2006 (40.1) and 2009 (40.4).The hot conditions were almost uniform for the entire State. Malkangiri, headquarters town of the southernmost district, recorded 39.4 degrees whereas Baripada recorded over 37 degrees C on the day. At least 14 stations, out of 22 for which the India Meteorological Centre provided daily recordings, showed a 34 degree-plus temperature. Most of the western Odisha towns such as Titligarh, Balangir and colliery town Angul recorded 38 degrees C and above. The Capital was, however, the hottest. The weather office said the maximum day temperature was at least seven degrees above normal.
