BANGALORE: Metro tunneling work is making steady progress as the two tunnel boring machines (TBM) are in the shaft. At the underground metro station in majestic, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has deployed two TBMs, namely Helen and Margarita.TBM Helen has burrowed 15 meters deep tunnel so far, while Margarita is still being assembled, the tunneling work will start by July.“Bangalore’s terrain is tricky, so we are carrying out the tunneling work very cautiously. That is why the progress is slow, however, it won’t be so once we pick up speed,” BMRCL Engineer and Spokesperson B L Y Chavan said. The tunnel boring machines that are deployed 20 meters below the ground are equipped with 1200kW cutter head drive power, which has the capability to burrow 18 to 20 metres per day.“Once the work begins at faster pace, we will be tunneling 10 meters everyday,” Chavan added. On the Majestic metro site, the BMRCL has deployed pumps to remove slurry. Reportedly, these pumps mix the muck generated during tunneling work with water and is then sent to the slurry treatment plant. The water then is separated and the waste is used in landfill, while the water is again sent back to be used for making more slurry.Fifty eight trained officials are deployed at the Majestic site. Once the work is completed there, TBMs will be lifted to Central College and then to Vidhana Soudha.
