CHENNAI: State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr V S Vijay was stranded during a visit to the Royapettah Government General Hospital, when the lift he was using, is believed to have jammed and stopped between two floors. According to well-placed sources, Dr Vijay was inaugurating the revamped ICU and the extended wards for the Chief Minister’s Health Insurance Scheme at the GH, when he attempted to go down from the second floor to the first, via the reasonably new lift.As soon as he entered the lift, the doors apparently jammed shut and moved down before stopping in the space between the two floors. Repeated attempts by the hospital staff to get the doors open and let the Minister out failed. After a brief delay, SOS calls to Public Works Department personnel paid off, as they managed to set the glitch right. An unfazed Minister is then believed to have gone about the inauguration without creating any stir. A source close to the Minister said that he had asked for all the lifts and public service mechanisms in all GHs, dispensaries and PHCs across the State to be checked and repaired, if necessary. It may be recalled that soon after Dr Vijay assumed charge of the Health Ministry, he found a lift not working at the GGH and ordered that it be repaired.
