“They beat him till he was squealing for help. He was begging them to let him go... but the mob only got more furious and kept beating him,” said Rina, a woman’s activist who witnessed a 13-year-old boy being brutally beaten up in broad daylight at Mulanthuruthy more than a week ago.
According to police, the boy who has been identified as Jino was beaten up because he allegedly made fun of a girl in his neighbourhood. The furious crowd accompanied by the girl’s brother who arrived on motorbikes beat up the boy up till he fell to the ground nearly unconscious. The boy broke his jaw bone and his chest was punctured in the incident.
Various activists and a few residents in the Pullikkamari village at Mulanthuruthy, have protested against the cruel treatment meted out to the young boy by men who were all above 30 years of age. “We saw Jino running and trying to escape from the grasp of the men. He barely made it to the next street before they arrived on bikes and again beat him up,” a resident said.
After some time, the group of men dispersed from the area and left the boy bleeding there. His friends who came back after the crowd left and took him to his house.
However, his family could not take Jino to the hospital immediately as the mob stood outside his house, threatening the family. According to witnesses, the boy was taken to the hospital only the next day.
The residents have alleged that the police have not yet taken any action against the group of people.
“We have received word that there are ten people involved in this case. The identity of five persons we have got, but all of them are absconding. We are trying to trace them. A case against attempted murder will be registered against them,” Mulanthuruthy SI Younis said.
