Follow us:WhatsappFacebookTwitterTelegram.cls-1{fill:#4d4d4d;}.cls-2{fill:#fff;}Google News The coastal region of Vizhinjam went through tense moments on Sunday as the Fire Force, local people and the police battled hard to save three men who were trapped in a mud slip. One man was trapped underneath the loose soil which caved in while a well was being dug and and two others found themselves in trouble while trying to save him. The well was 25 feet deep, according to the Fire and Rescue Service. The incident occurred at Kurisadinadayil, Vizhinjam, around 11 am. Babu of Mukkola was trapped neck-deep in loose soil and it took six hours to rescue him, Fire officials said. The other two men were identified as Babu’s son Jithu and a relative, Sanil. The mishap occurred while they were digging a new well beside an old one that had been abandoned because it had no water. Babu was inside the new well and soil dug up from it was being used to fill the old one. But part of the old well caved in trapping Babu. Sanil promptly let himself down to try and save him, but he lost consciousness and had to be lifted out by the local people. The Vizhinjam unit of the Fire and Rescue Service was alerted immediately and they in turn informed the units in Thiruvananthapuram. A team led by Technical Director Sivanandan soon sped to the spot. In the meantime, Jithu climbed down into the well to save his father who was being slowly choked under the loose soil. He kept Babu’s head above the mud, and by then the Fire units arrived. Jithu was lifted out. ‘’We had to do two works simultaneously to save Babu. “One, remove the soil that was pulling him down, and two, dig a channel near the old well and remove the soil from it so that it did not cave in again,’’ a Fire and Rescue Service official said. Babu was also handed an oxygen mask and a regular supply of water. Finally, by 5.40 pm, he was lifted out of the well and rushed to hospital much the relief of his family and the crowd. first published:January 01, 1970, 05:30 ISTlast updated:January 01, 1970, 05:30 IST
