Mumbai’s civic body is opting to construct bridges to ease traffic congestion in the city. The BMC has decided to connect Madh and Versova by a cable bridge over the local creek, and has floated a Rs 1,800-crore tender for the project.
The 3-km cable bridge will provide all-weather connectivity and cut down travel time from one-and-a-half-hour to 10 minutes between Madh and Versova. It will help ease traffic in Andheri, Madh, Borivali and Gorai areas of the western suburbs.
The distance between Madh and Versova is 21 to 22 km and, depending on the traffic flow, it takes at least an hour and a half to cover it. At present, Madh and Versova are also connected by a ferry service, in which passengers can also accommodate their two-wheelers, but this is not available during the rainy season.
While the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority had earlier allowed the project, it only gave its official approval recently. According to the tender floated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), it will take three years to construct the bridge.
Local fisherfolk had protested against the project citing environmental, technical and mangrove depletion issues. But, after much deliberation between the BMC and local fisherfolk, the civic body managed to convince them. The project was conceived nearly a decade ago. Yet, its blueprint was only finalised in 2020.
Elevated road to connect Khar subway to Bandra terminus
The BMC has planned to connect the Khar subway (east and west) to the Bandra terminus connector (east and west) via an elevated road. For this work, which will be completed in three parts, the civic body has floated a tender of Rs 500 crore.
The 5-km elevated road will start from Santacruz East Nehru Road to Khar West near the Western Express Highway (WEH) service road, in the first phase. In the second phase, it will connect Bandra terminus and station to Chembur link road on WEH. The third phase will connect the WEH and Chembur link road to the flyover near the Khar subway.
