Jaipur/ New Delhi: A special court in Jaipur on Wednesday acquitted former Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activist Swami Aseemanand and 6 others in the Ajmer Shrif Dargah blast of 2007.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) special court convicted Bhavesh Patel, Devendra Gupta and Sunil Joshi who was murdered in December 2007. Three of the total 14 accused are still missing and on the run.
The quantum of punishment will be announced on March 16, 2017.
Hearing in this case was completed in the first week of January in which 149 witnesses were examined and 451 documents were produced before the court. The court was due to announce the verdict on February 25 but had postponed it to March 8.
The accused were charged with hatching a conspiracy for the blast, murder, causing communal disharmony under sections of IPC and Prevention of Unlawful Activities Act and Explosive Substances Act. Out of 149 witnesses in the case 26 turned hostile. The first accused in the case was arrested in 2010. The case was handed over to ATS, before being transferred to NIA in 2011. After the ATS Chargesheet, NIA filed three supplementary chargesheets. The case saw a twist some years ago when Bhavesh Patel said he was being pressurised to name senior RSS leaders by Congress leader Digvijaya Singh.
