THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kamala Surayya, ‘the nightingale of love’, still remains a warm presence in the Malayali psyche, said Finance Minister KM Mani. He was speaking after inaugurating the commemoration function organised by Kerala Kalakendram here on Thursday, on the third death anniversary of the writer."Surayya was Malayalam’s gift to world literature. Her works and life are embodiments of love. Her relevance gains importance in a society in which men ruthlessly kill fellow beings and show no repentance,’’ he said. "Though born to a traditional family her work took her fame to places cutting across the barriers of language, time and region,’’ Mani added.Writer George Onakkoor, in his memorial address, said Surayya and her works fly like butterflies in the minds of Malayalis. "Her life and works radiated the warmth of love. She sang nothing but love,’’ he said. He said the Kerala society miserably failed to give her due love and respect.Former Minister Binoy Viswam remembered Surayya as an amazing personality beyond any definition. "She gave new dimensions to Indian-English poetry. Her contributions to the genre is yet to be put for a research,’’ he said.Surayya’s works reflect the various moods of women, he said. "One could feel revolt, innocence, indifference and many more in her works,’’ he added.Mani distributed the first ‘Kamala Surayya Awards’ instituted by the Kalakendram for young short story writers. B Sandhya IPS introduced the winning entries. The Kamala Surayya Award was presented to Anarkaly. Devendu Das, Aswathy Sasikumar, Surya Gopi and Valsa George won the special awards.Kalakendram general secretary K Anandakumar welcomed the gathering. Shashi Paravoor proposed the vote of thanks.
