TIRUCHY: The National Institute of Technology-Tiruchy will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the BrahMos for research in hypersonic materials and processes for hypersonic Brahmos.Speaking to Express, NIT-T director N Srinivasan Sundarrajan said engineers and scientists would work with NIT-T for post graduate and PhD degrees. BrahMos was positively supporting research park to be set up on the NIT-T campus. Both the NIT-T and BrahMos would approach the Department of Science and Technology at the Centre for support.Robotics was another area identified for collaboration. The NIT-T has requested the BrahMos to set up a centre on the campus which would be the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu. Dr Sivathanu Pillai,  Chief Controller, Research & Development, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Ministry of Defence  and Srinivasa Sundarrajan agreed to bring those initiatives into the memorandum of understanding to be signed by mid-March. The other areas include electronic packaging and quality management. Focus on Solar, Nuclear EnergySivathanu Pillai in his address at the Pragyan-2012 on Saturday urged TN to focus on solar and nuclear energy to tide over the power crisis in the State.He said India was generating 4,780 MW from nuclear energy and assured that it would touch 40,000 MW by 2020. “Besides, Nano Science and Technology, Molecular Biology and Environment Science are the prominent areas to concentrate,” Sivathanu Pillai said. On the rocket technology, he said so far the country was launching light weight rockets and added that in future the nation would concentrate on sending rockets with heavier payloads. Satellites played a major role in communication since mobile phones, television and radio depended on them. Through satellite, 382 hospitals had been connected with 60 super speciality hospitals.On the country’s moon mission, he said only one Indian astronaut Rakesh Sharma had been sent to the moon and the area needed further concentration.
