The state celebrated Onam drenched in heavy rains. South west monsoon, which was showing a weak performance since its onset, regained activity in the last week of August.
Monsoon is 29 percent deficient in the state till Thursday. Compared to the 43 percent deficiency during the first week of August, monsoon was active over the state by the month-end.
South west monsoon continued to be vigorous over state on Thursday. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) here, the state will receive widespread heavy rainfall till Saturday.
“The situation is likely to continue till Saturday morning. The rainfall activity will subdue after that,” said P S Biju, scientist, IMD.
According to IMD website, a low pressure area has formed over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal near the Orissa-north and Andhra Pradesh coast.
Till Thursday, the state received 127.8 cm rainfall against the long-period average of 178.6 cm.
Except Kasargod, all other districts have deficient rainfall this season. Kasargod has a 14-percent deficiency, which is normal in IMD’s definition. Wayand (-59 percent), Thiruvananthapuram (-47), Kollam (-45 percent) and Alapuzha (-43 percent) are some of the worst-affected districts.
Though the state is getting widespread heavy rainfall, chances are bleak for a normal monsoon.
“The state gets only 12 percent rainfall in September. Monsoon will start withdrawing from various parts of the country by mid-September. So, there is less chance for a normal monsoon this season,” Biju said.
The state is less likely to experience the withdrawal of monsoon as it coincides with the onset of north east monsoon.
On Thursday, heavy rains were reported in Kanjirappally (9 cm), Ponnani (8 cm), Kayamkulam, Quilandy and Vadakara (7 cm each), Kozhikode, Kodungallur and Vythiri (6 cm each).
