Lahore: AAwais Sheikh, the lawyer of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh who died after a murderous assault on him inside Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail, was allegedly abducted along with his son on Thursday morning in Pakistan and freed after a few hours in captivity.
A few hours after the abduction, Sheikd told some media persons that he and his son had been freed.
Sheikh had claimed a threat to his life because he was fighting the case of an Indian prisoner, who had been convicted of terror charges and spying.
The father-son duo was reportedly abducted by a group of unknown gunmen from an area near the border with India. According to Pakistani news website dawn.com the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Lahore Jawad Ahmad Dogar confirmed that Sheikh had been kidnapped, adding that an investigative team had been constituted for his recovery.
Sheikh and his son Shahrukh had gone to a village in Burki Hudaira area on Thursday morning to buy land for a farmhouse. Two men riding a motorcycle, who were reportedly wearing police uniforms, intercepted them, said Haroon, another son of Sheikh.
The lawyer and his son were bundled into a pick-up truck and taken to an unknown location, Haroon told the police. Police launched a search operation to trace the two men. No one claimed responsibility for the abductions.
Sheikh was the lawyer for Sarabjit, who died on May 2 after being comatose for nearly a week following a brutal assault by other prisoners in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail.
