CHENNAI: Finance minister O Panneerselvam on Thursday announced two major initiatives for Chennai city —the Chennai Mega City Development Mission (CMCDM), to be implemented at Rs 500 crore, and augmentation of the reservoir capacity by 4.20 tmcft at a cost of Rs 1,851 crore.Presenting the Budget for 2011-12 in the Assembly, the minister said storage capacities at Thervaikandigai, Thirukandalam and Ramanjeri reservoirs would be increased by 1 tmcft each. Besides, 0.9 tmcft would be added by restoring six tanks—Nemam, Porur, Iyambakkam, Ambattur, Korattur and Madhavaram, and a further 0.3 tmcft added by deepening the Cholavaram tank. Investigation would also be taken up to establish a 400 MLD desalination plant to fill the present gap in water supply in Chennai city, he added.The minister announced that under the CMCDM, existing schemes would be dovetailed to improve the standards of basic infrastructure, like roads and streets, drinking water, sewerage and sanitation, storm water drains, solid waste management, improvement of bus stands and parking places, in an integrated manner.He also said a comprehensive project for solid waste management in Chennai and its suburban areas would be prepared to avail of carbon credits. Similarly, a comprehensive project for waste water management to improve and integrate the sewerage system in Chennai and its suburban areas, complete treatment and recycling of waste water and to prevent the entry of sewerage water into the city’s river system and beautification of the river emabankments would be prepared for its implementation to protect the city river system from pollution.
