KOCHI: The parents meeting of CBSE/ICSE schools held here on Sunday decided to take up legal course to sort out the issue of the fall in the ranking of CBSE/ICSE students in the latest engineering rank list after the normalisation procedure. The normalisation of marks of different streams was done with reference to the Kerala Higher Secondary stream, which was taken as the base in the procedure. The new rank list was developed after incorporating the normalised marks of the respective board exams with the marks of the entrance examination.“The ranking of students in CBSE and ICSE schools has gone down by thousands. The normalisation that is applied is neither scientific nor justifiable,” said Pradeep P, father of an ICSE student who had appeared for the entrance exam.Pradeep’s daughter’s rank has gone down from 8,000 to 13,000 after normalisation.“My daughter had scored 90 per cent marks for her Maths exam under the ICSE board but after normalisation it has come down to 79 per cent.” The parents have questioned the validity of the new ranking system at a time when five cases against the system are still pending in the court. It was also alleged that the students were made victims.“When we approached the government authorities they said the government would not take any action on the issue under the current political scenario. The authorities say that this was a policy decision taken up by the previous government and in the background of the self-financing issue, this will create further political turmoil. But this would mean the future of thousands of students are now at stake,” said Dr Sanil Kumar, another parent of a CBSE student.“ The boy with the second rank has come to the third position after normalisation. Here the difference is by one rank. But in the case of a student with the rank 12,000, it has now dropped to over 20,000 and a student with a rank of 22,000 has gone down to 50,000,” said the parent of a CBSE student.
