Park Street rape case: SC refuses bail to two accused
A 37-year-old woman, who is a mother of two, was allegedly raped at gunpoint in a moving car on February 5, 2012.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed the bail pleas of two of the five accused in the Park Street gangrape of Kolkata saying it was not a fit case for granting relief as two of the alleged culprits are still absconding.

The apex court refused to interfere with the Calcutta High Court order denying bail to Sumit Bajaj and Mohd Nasir Khan, who were among the five youths accused of gangraping an Anglo-Indian woman in a car on February 5 last year.

The West Bengal Government opposed the appeal filed by the two accused against the decision of the High Court, which had rejected their bail plea on October 19, 2012. The state government said the arrest in the case was made after gathering evidence about their alleged involvement in the crime.

A 37-year-old woman, who is a mother of two, was allegedly raped at gunpoint in a moving car on February 5, 2012. The woman claimed that she was offered a lift by four men, whom she befriended at a nightclub the same night.

She had managed to track down the culprits on a social networking website and had taken snapshots of their photographs to file a complaint against them. The police managed to crack the case with the help of a CCTV footage from outside Park Hotel which showed the woman getting inside the car with four men, as was originally claimed by the victim.
